University of California, Santa Barbara A Student Interview
University of California, Santa Barbara A Student Interview The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Olga is a Miami tutor and 1997 graduate of University of California, Santa Barbara. She holds a Bachelors degree in English and tutors several subjects, including Essay Editing tutoring, Reading tutoring, and Writing tutoring. Check out what Olga had to say about her time at University of California, Santa Barbara: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or rural is the campus? Did you feel safe on campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Olga: The University of California, Santa Barbara campus is not in the middle of a big city. Instead, it is at the edge of Santa Barbara, partially surrounded by the ocean. The campus connects to a small college town, and most students live there. They either walk, skateboard, or bike to campus. For those living outside of the college town, a car is a must. The campus has a very friendly, low-key atmosphere. I never sensed any form of danger there. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Olga:The professors are not really available at a moments notice, but they will meet with you if you schedule a time. There are teaching assistants for every large class, and they meet with students much more frequently. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Olga:I never lived in the dorms, but I had friends who did, and they thoroughly enjoyed it. The college town that I mentioned not only has dorms, but also many apartment buildings that serve as rentals for college students. The college has many dining options, and healthy food options are everywhere. Students tend to bond quickly especially in the upper-level classes, where they share common interests. Many study groups eventually lead to friendships. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Olga:I am not sure what majors are best supported, but I know that as an English major, the curriculum was centered around literature (especially British classics). They also have an excellent Education major, which I hear is far better than most. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Olga:Meeting people was easy. I found that the students who attended University of California, Santa Barbara mostly had a very laid back approach to life, and they were easy-going, social individuals. I did not notice too much Greek life action going on, though it does exist. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Olga:I cannot honestly answer this question, as I never had a need for this particular service. There was not much recruitment going on in the English major world. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Olga:Study areas, libraries, and student unions were easily accessible. They were spacious and very scenic. I have no idea about the dorm lounges I never lived in the dorms, nor hung out in them. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Olga:The main street in Santa Barbara is beautiful, homey, and filled with quaint establishments for eating and drinking. Weekends are never boring. The town is very artsy, and music and art is everywhere. If you like that sort of thing, Santa Barbara is your place, not to mention the beach areas where surfing becomes a great way to spend your free time. Santa Barbara is very animal-friendly, and dogs can be seen everywhere. Weekdays are more quiet, but there are plenty of events and activities for those with special interests. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Olga:There are about 20,000 students. Some of my classes were quite large (with auditorium seating), but others were just the opposite. I was pleased with the class sizes because those classes that were large were all accompanied by a study class lead by the teaching assistant. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Olga:My father passed away the same week as finals, and he lived in another state, requiring me to travel. I communicated with my professors at the time, and I found that all of them were very sympathetic and accommodating. They worked with me to ensure that my exams were completed in time for me to earn credit for the classes. I really appreciated never having to go to the Dean with a request to extend my courses for this purpose. Check out Olgas tutoring profile. It can help give you credibility and will attract more clients. If you do get certified then do it from an institute that is a recognised professional body. More and more people are now buying self-help books and are invested in personal development. This area is similar to life coaching in the sense that it helps clients get unstuck in their lives and help them reach a different state. People seeking personal development donât necessarily have a specific goal in mind rather that they want to improve themselves overall. Health Coaching A wellness coach is in a very interesting position. This is the person between a healthcare professional and a fitness trainer. The idea of a wellness coach is to work with a client to find their goals and then guide them through the obstacles which make them regress into unhealthy behaviour.A business coach can help you reach your goals (Photo via Visual Hunt)Business CoachingThis is easily one of the most profitable coaching areas out there. Business coaches are in high demand. They can help entrepreneurs have the c onfidence to fulfil their dreams. As a business coach, you can help create businesses, and help businesses increase profits. If you have business experience that you want to share this is the area for you, youâll definitely have no shortage of clients!Career Transition Coaching: Career transition is always tricky for a number of reasons. Usually, people need a lot of adjusting and training before they join their new job. People might need someone to help them get through their interviews. It goes without saying that being a career transition coach brings with it a lot of responsibility. As a career transitioning coach people are handing over their careers and professional futures to you. It is your responsibility to help them find their next step career-wise. Executive Coaching: The corporate world is really hectic and for those in an executive position there is a lot of pressure to be âonâ all the time. Usually, executives are so busy with work that they donât get basic executive training. They donât know how to properly lead a team, simple team building exercises and how to get the most out of their team. An executive coach can help these people get the most out of themselves and their team. Sales Coaching: Sales is the driving force behind any industry and company. If you want to measure how a particular industry is doing you just check their sales and that will give you the answer. So it is no surprise that so many big companies and salesmen are seeking the help of coaches in this particular area. To be a sales coach you must have a proven track record in the sales industry and also a robust strategy where you can teach anyone the tricks of the trade.Performance Coaching: Performance coaching utilises psychological tactics to help people elevate their general job performance. Performance coaches use business and sports psychology to help an individual perform at optimal levels and to make them more of a team player. More and more corporates are seeking help from performance coaches to help elevate the game of their employees. Two Ways to Coach ClientsOne-on-one Coaching: Depending on what type of coaching youâre doing one-on-one can be the best choice. If for example you want to be a relationship coach then it is, of course, the best way. You can tailor sessions to each particular client so you can help them reach their goals.Group Coaching: Group coaching is another option. The advantages that it has over one-on-one is tremendous in certain areas. If for example, you decide to be a business coach or a sales coach then holding group sessions is an obvious choice. A lot of your clients will have similar questions and doubts. On top of that, being part of a group forces clients to think of solutions and questions that they may never have thought of if they were not interacting with the group. Plus, it also creates a healthy community and network for your clients.Whatever area you go into as a coach make sure you are c onfident in your choice. Donât forget that people will rely on you a lot as a coach. But remember also that you are only there as a guide, you are not an instructor. You are no there to tell your client what to do but rather to help guide them to help themselves. Whether you are a personal development coach or a sales coach your role is to remain subjective and help empower your client by equipping them with the tools to do so! Read about spiritual coaching.

7 little Self-care tips for lazy people to start today
Introvert Whisperer / 7 little Self-care tips for lazy people to start today 7 little Self-care tips for lazy people to start today Evelyn Kail March 4, 2017 Adaptability, Emotional Intelligence No responses So, your life isnât really going as planned. You missed the bus this morning and got to work late, your lunch buddy canceled on you so you ended up eating a tiny sandwich from the deli alone, your boss keeps piling more and more work on you and your pants are starting to feel a little tight. To top it off, you think you see a zit beginning to develop on your forehead. Then you go to bed, wake up, and this series of events repeats itself (with a little variation, of course). All you need to fix these problems is a little self-care. Thatâs where we come in weâve got a simple self-care guide that even the laziest of people will be able to follow. Read on to find out more! Tip #1: Exercise No one is stranger to the positive effects of exercise lowering risk of diabetes, heart disease, etc., as well as improving mood by releasing endorphins but while everyone is quick to tell you why you should exercise, you rarely get advice on how to actually begin exercising (and how to stick to it!). Going to a gym may be daunting if youâre not very fit (especially if youâre shy too) as being surrounded by a bunch of muscle maniacs is rather intimidating. But you donât have to go to a gym, you can work in exercise right into your busy schedule! Walk instead of taking the bus or a cab. Take the stairs instead of the lift. Take 15 minutes a day to do some squats or lunges right at home. If youâre really serious about exercising and getting fit, itâs a good idea to invest in a stationary exercise bike at home. That way, you wonât have to go to the gym and you can still get a gym-quality workout! Tip #2: Wash your face twice a day You need a good skincare regimen to keep your skin looking fresh and healthy. While you may not have the time for a long routine that involves multiple pots of creams and ointments, you should definitely set aside 5-10 extra minutes every night to 1) remove all your makeup and 2) wash your face with a gentle cleanser to get rid of all the dirt and grime your skin has accumulated through the day. Be sure to wash your face in the morning too! Apply a facial moisturizer after each wash to replenish the moisture that was just stripped away. If youâre more serious about skincare, try to exfoliate your facial skin and apply a soothing face mask 1-2 times a week. Your skin will then glow with health and vitality! Tip #3: Sleep Your brain and body need sleep to recover from the long day you just had. You should aim to get at least 6 hours of sleep a night, but 8 hours is the ideal amount. Try going to bed 10 minutes earlier each night. Itâs perfectly alright if you canât fall asleep the second your head hits the pillow. Simply lying there with your eyes closed will help your brain and body rest too. Tip #4: Meditate Reduce your stress and anxiety by meditating at least once a day. All you need to do is find a quiet spot with minimal stimulation (no loud noises or bright lights), close your eyes, and let your mind go blank. It helps if you can play soothing music too. You donât have to meditate for a long time 5 minutes a day is enough. Tip #5: Eat more fruits and veggies! What you eat doesnât just affect your health, it also affects your mood. If you eat healthy, youâll feel good, both physically and mentally. Fruits and veggies are loaded with vitamins and minerals that will boost your body and mind, so try to incorporate them into your diet. The next time you feel a craving for candy, munch on an apple or a carrot instead. Tip #6: Get some sun Spend 10-15 minutes out in the sun each day to soak up that vitamin D. You should aim to be out in the sunlight before 10 AM, as this is when the sunâs rays are the most beneficial. Read a book in the park or go for a walk youâll feel much healthier and happier afterward. Tip #7: Rest up Sleep isnât enough rest; you need to take short breaks from work (and life) during the day too! Otherwise, you run the risk of getting overwhelmed with all the work you have in front of you. Every 45 minutes or so, step outside for some fresh air or watch a funny video on YouTube basically, take a short breather. Then, get back to your work. Youâll find that your productivity and efficiency will be much higher. We understand itâs difficult to start following all 7 tips at once, so pick the easiest one and work your way through the rest of the list at your own pace.
The PSAT is over now what
The PSAT is over â" now what Parents of high school juniors, you may be wondering what your student should be doing to prepare for the SAT now that the PSAT is over (or almost over, if your student is taking the test on Saturday). PSAT scores donât come out until December, so many students put off further test preparation until after winter break. However, it can be academically beneficial and stress-reducing to get a head start on test preparation for spring!Students can use the time between now and when PSAT scores come back in December to take a practice SAT and ACT and see how they do on each test. Colleges accept either the SAT or ACT for admission. We here at AJ Tutoring recommend that students take both the SAT and the ACT â" after all, that gives you two chances to succeed! If your student would like some help preparing for the tests from our fabulous AJ tutors, itâs a great idea to complete a few tutoring sessions before winter break. This schedule allows the sessions to be spaced out before th e March SAT or April ACT. And with high schoolersâ incredibly busy schedules these days (Iâm thinking of my student who plays two sports, participates in student government, and takes 4 APs), spreading out the tutoring reduces stress and allows ample time for academics and other activities. We know that junior year is a busy year, especially at competitive high schools like Paly, St. Francis, Los Gatos, Saratoga and many others, where college preparation starts early and never lets up. Joe and Aaron, the co-owners of AJ Tutoring, are experts at developing tutoring and testing plans that work for studentsâ individual needs and schedules. Email or call them today (info@ajtutoring.com, (650) 331-3251) to discuss your studentâs game plan now that the PSAT is over!To summarize, juniors waiting for PSAT results should: ⢠Take a practice SAT and ACT and compare the test scores ⢠Continue to excel in academic courses at school ⢠Talk to Aaron or Joe about a testing schedule for junior and senior year ⢠Complete three or four tutoring sessions before winter break
Creating A Scholarship Game Plan
Creating A Scholarship Game Plan Parents of high school students have plenty on their minds, but at the top of the list is paying for collegeand for good reason. The cost of college has risen steadily for the last three decades.* While many families plan on taking out federal loans to help cover the cost, teens should absolutely apply for scholarships. That gift aid (free money) can make the cost of college a little or a lot more affordable. There are thousands of scholarships out there that can come from many different sources: the federal government, state government, colleges and universities, private organizations, nonprofits and even businesses. It is definitely worthwhile to search and apply for scholarships, but in a methodical, organized way. Here are a few tips on creating a scholarship search game plan: Create a spreadsheet for tracking research. Before teens start researching scholarships, its a good idea to develop a system for keeping track of them. Many of the popular scholarship engines out there have a dashboard of their own that allows students to manage their scholarship matches and application progress, but its wise for teens to have their own database too since they might apply to different scholarships from different sources. A simple Google Sheet or Excel spreadsheet will do the trick. Research. Too often, high schoolers disregard the idea of scholarships, thinking theyre reserved only for the highest achieving students. However, there are scholarships for students from many backgrounds with various skills and in different niches. Students should do their research, keeping several things in mind: Get to know the guidance counselor. Sign up for any college platform or email list recommended by the high school guidance counseling office (such as Naviance), which is likely to be the best way to keep on top of deadlines for scholarships the school advertises. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is used by both state and federal agencies (and colleges use the FAFSAs Student Aid Report to determine the financial aid award they offer, which might include scholarships). Keep small scholarships in mind, as they tend to be less competitive and can add up quickly. Start early, as many scholarships require elements like letters of recommendation and essays. Find ways to be efficient, like reusing/revising personal statements and essays to fit similar but slightly different scholarship applications. In addition to the guidance counselors office, there are many other places to look for scholarships: Scholarship databases like scholarships.com and fastweb.com Local foundations, community organizations, businesses and civic groups Library resource desk Dedicate time each week to scholarship research. There are lots of scholarships available to students, but those who earn them are dedicated and diligent. Teens should make time every week for researching scholarships and applying to those for which theyre qualified. Log progress. Teens should update their scholarship spreadsheet regularly, which will keep deadlines top of mind and keep them motivated to continue the effort. Heres an example of how a tracking system might look: Name Provider Website Deadline Award Criteria Other Status Johnson Scholarship ABC Foundation ABCFoundation.com 11/1/2019 $5K - $10K per year for tuition + fees in-state schools 3.75 GPA New Freshman, Top 10% of class Average SAT 1300 Average ACT 30 Letter of rec Interview required Requested letter from Ms. Smith 8/10/2019 Started online application 9/1/2019 Applying for scholarships takes effort, but the task is much less stressful when teens stay organized. Parents, encourage your teens to approach the job in a disciplined way, which will make it easier to apply widely and streamline the application process. * Trends in College Pricing 2017, published by the College Board, states that over the past three decades, the dollar increases in published tuition and fees (in 2017 dollars) ranged from $1,550 (from 1987-88 to 1997-98) to $2,690 (from 2007-08 to 2017-18) at public four-year institutions and from $5,860 (from 1987-88 to 1997-98) to $7,220 (from 2007-08 to 2017-18) in the private nonprofit four-year sector.
Can I teach English abroad for the summer
Can I teach English abroad for the summer Remember how awesome summer was when you were a kid? Freed from the everyday grind of school, months of complete freedom lay before you. Every day was a chance to do something new, to have an adventure, to make new friends and create memories that would last a lifetime. If youâre like most of us, the magic of summer dimmed somewhat as you got older. If youâre in college or university, summer is probably not so much a time to do amazing things after a long and sometimes tedious school year as it is a time to get an even more tedious summer job in order to pay for more school. If youâre in the workforce, well, maybe the only sign it even is summer is that the view from your office window when you look up from your computer screen is now sunshine instead of snow, which you enjoy for a few seconds before looking back at your computer screen again. What happened? Do summers as adults have to be like this? Can summer once again be a time for adventures and new life experiences? Well, yes it can, which is why you should consider teaching English abroad for the summer. Imagine being in a new place, experiencing a new culture and having daily adventures and new experiences just like you used to as a kid! First things first, weâre not going to lie to you. Most English schools abroad are looking to hire teachers for at least an entire school year. This means that the options for teaching English abroad for just the summer are a little bit more limited than if you were willing or able to make a long-term commitment. The Teach Away job board is a great source of info regarding more long-term English teaching jobs. But if youâre just looking to teach during your own schoolâs summer break, or take a summer sabbatical from work, it can still be done, and here are some ideas how. Option 1: Teach English at a summer camp What better way to remember how awesome childhood summers were than by spending your summer as a camp counselor at an English language summer camp? English language summer camps are particularly popular in Europe, and are similar to the summer camps of your youth with games and outdoor activities. These are great opportunities for university students on summer break as a degree is usually not required (though a TEFL certificate would be a plus). Instead, the primary prerequisites are the ability to speak English (well, duh!), a youthful personality and the ability to lead recreational activities and games. Some English language instruction may be required, but at the end of the day it is a camp, not a school, so having fun (in English) is the name of the game. Many of the camps will require the counselors to live on site and conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times, so free time might be minimal, but hey, you are living at a summer camp! As a plus, room and board will usually be provided, meaning you can save most of the money you earn for books (or, who are we kidding, beer) for the fall semester. Check out Camp Europe for upcoming positions. Sign up to Teach Away today for access to the latest teaching jobs around the world. Option 2: Teach English online for the summer Weâre currently looking for university graduates from Canada and the United States to teach English to Chinese students online from the comfort of their own home. However, nobody says where your own home has to be! Home may be where the heart is, but for the purposes of teaching English online, home can be anywhere with a reliable internet connection. Becoming an online English teacher could mean spending the summer, well, wherever you want! It could be as easy as throwing a dart at a map and grabbing your laptop. Be warned however, that teaching hours are geared toward the convenience of the students in China, so depending on where you choose to set up shop and what timezone it is in, you may be working some odd hours. Read this: This calculator shows how much you can earn teaching English online (Hint: Itâs a lot!) Option 3: Teach English in a homestay abroad Another option when it comes to summer teaching jobs abroad is to stay with a family, receiving room and board in exchange for tutoring them or their children. This is a great chance for a complete cultural immersion, and you might be able to also get some lessons in the local language as part of the exchange. Social media or local classified websites (think Craigslist or the local equivalent) are a great way to find and negotiate these exchanges yourself (often with the help of Google Translate, because after all, if they spoke English, they wouldnât need you!) Another good site for homestay English teaching opportunities is Greenheart Travel. Option 4: Apply for volunteer English teaching opportunities Okay, so youâre not going to be getting paid for these, but letâs be honest, that university summer job probably isnât paying you that much either and you canât put a price on helping to make the world a better place.
